Position Overview: SMWK is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented law student, public policy student, or other interested and qualified individual to join our team as a Legislative Intern for the 2025 Maryland General Assembly Session. This position provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in state-level lobbying, legislative research, and public policy advocacy. The intern will work closely with our experienced lobbyists, attend legislative sessions and committee hearings, and contribute to the development of legislative strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legislative Research: Conduct thorough research on proposed legislation, policy issues, and regulatory developments relevant to our clients.
  • Bill Tracking: Monitor and report on the progress of relevant bills throughout the legislative session.
  • Committee Support: Attend committee hearings, briefings, and legislative sessions; take detailed notes and prepare summaries for internal and client use.
  • Client Communication: Assist in preparing written reports, presentations, and summaries on legislative matters for our clients.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Support the scheduling and preparation of meetings with legislators, staff, and key stakeholders.
  • Advocacy Support: Contribute to the development and execution of advocacy strategies, including drafting testimony and position statements.

Qualifications:

  • A strong interest in state-level government, public policy, and the legislative process.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and a keen attention to detail.
  • Previous experience in government, lobbying, or public policy is a plus, but not required.

Duration: January 2025 – April 2025, with the possibility of some preparatory work beginning in December 2024.

Compensation: This is a paid position. Compensation will be based on experience and time commitment.
